The horror of war. The graphic novel, Maus My Father Bleeds History, tells the sad and horrific story of the genocide of millions of Jews during World War II. Art Spiegelman tells his father Vladek’s story of being a Jewish survivor of the Holocaust. In this creative story, Jewish people are portrayed as mice and the Nazi’s are portrayed as cats in this deadly game of literal cat and mouse. Death, betrayal, love and fear are all things Vladek experiences during the war. In Maus, My Father Bleeds History, Art expresses his father’s experiences through each creative frame of the graphic novel. Even though the book is illustrated only in black and white, it stills paints the picture that war is horrible and deadly. War is the other great equalizer, along with death, it doesn’t matter if you are rich or poor, it leaves its mark forever on heart and soul.
